Nicholas Demian, 98, of Olyphant died Monday at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. His wife, the former Helen Youshock, preceded him in death on September 20, 2022. They were married for 74 years.
Born Dec. 18, 1925, in Vintondale , he was the son of the late Michael and Anna Dziama Demian. Nick was a 1943 graduate of Olyphant High School and retired as Vice President of the former Jerry’s Sports Center.
Nick was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving during WWII. He was a member of St. John’s Russian Orthodox Cathedral, Mayfield and the Kingsbury Lodge #466 F&AM, Olyphant. He formerly served on the Mid Valley School Board and Olyphant Borough Council.
Nicholas enjoyed hunting, fishing, going for walks, and spending time with his family. He loved telling stories about his late wife, Helen, and their life together. Helen and Nicholas took their family on many vacations and also enjoyed visiting casinos in their free time. Nicholas’ greatest joy were his grandchildren. He traveled near and far to see all of their activities.
Surviving are son, Dr. Nicholas Demian Jr. and wife, Marcia, Olyphant; daughter, Cheryl Chieffallo and husband, Joseph, Lake Ariel; brother, Basil Demian, Olyphant; grandchildren, Nicholas Demian, Lucas Demian, Joseph Chieffallo and Rebeca Chieffallo.
Nick was also preceded in death by two brothers: Walter Demian and Michael Demyan and a sister, Margaret Evanina.
Requiem Service will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. in St. John’s Russian Orthodox Cathedral, Mayfield, with services by the Very Rev. John Sorochka and Fr. Nathaniel Sorochka. Family and friends may pay their respects from 9 a.m. until time of service. Interment will follow at St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Cemetery, South Canaan.
