Francis A. “Shilly” Fitzgerald, 87, of Throop, died on Saturday at Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton. His parents were the late William and Sarah Corcoran Fitzgerald. Born in Throop, he was a lifelong resident. He was a graduate of St. Patrick’s High School, Olyphant and the University of Scranton. He retired on December 31, 1999 from Lackawanna County Area Agency on Aging with 33 years of service. Prior to that, he was a pharmaceutical salesman. An Army veteran of World War II, he served under General Patton during the Normandy invasion. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, Olyphant and was a Past Grand Knight with the Knights of Columbus, Olyphant Council #1095. He was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and was a former Grand Marshall of the Scranton St. Patrick’s Day parade. He was also a former board member and a member emeritus at the Elmhurst Country Club. A former member of the Democratic Committee, Throop and the Throop Lions Club, he was also a member of American Legion Raymond Henry Post #327, Olyphant. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed gardening. He is survived by a sister, Margaret Mary “Mazie” Fitzgerald, Throop, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by 4 brothers: William, John, Benedict and Robert. The funeral will be held at 9AM on Friday from the Hudak-O’Shea Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Garfield Avenue, Olyphant. Services will be held by the American Legion, Raymond Henry Post #327 at 8:45AM at the funeral home. Mass will be concelebrated at 9:30AM at St. Patrick’s Church, Delaware St., Olyphant by the Rev. Thomas M. Muldowney and Rev. James Shimsky, St. Mary’s Church, Dunmore. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 8PM at the funeral home.
