Aloysius F. “Bud” Merkel, 97, of Olyphant, died on Friday night at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. His wife, the former Dolores Dixon, died in 1982.
Born in Dunmore, Al resided in Olyphant most of his life. His parents were the late Joseph C. and Genevieve Weniger Merkel. He graduated high school at The Pontifical College Josephinum, Ohio.
He retired from Lockheed Martin in 1989 with 37 years of service as an electronics inspector. He was a very kind and generous person who was devoted to his faith, his family, and his church and supported many religious organizations.
Al was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army in France, Germany and Austria.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Merkel, Peckville; one sister, Theresa Kocis, Dunmore; many nieces and nephews.
Al was preceded in death by four brothers: Rev. Francis J. Merkel, John, Joseph and Carl Merkel; five sisters: Elizabeth Merkel, Mary Kennedy, Sr. Aloysius, SCC, Margaret Rizzo, and Sr. Frances de Sales, SCC.
Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11am at Holy Cross Parish in St. Patrick’s Church with Rev. Charles Kennedy as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Blakely.

Friends may call from 10AM until time of the service at the church. The family encourages those attending to wear a mask.
