Ann Soya

March 21, 1918 — September 14, 2009

Ann Soya, 91 of Olyphant, died on Monday morning.  Her husband, Anthony T. died in February of 1986.  They were married for 42 years. Born in Olyphant, she was a lifelong resident.  Her parents were the late John and Amelia Bazarewicz. She was valedictorian of her graduating class at Johnson School and also attended Lackawanna Business College. She worked for Olyphant Borough as Tax Collector clerk and was chief clerk for the Light Office with 27 years of service. A member of St. Michael the Archangel Church, Olyphant, she was a 3 year chairwoman for the Jr. Catholic Daughters of St. Michael’s, a 3 year president of their Confraternity of Christian Women and leader of the children’s arts & crafts.  She was secretary and treasurer of the Mid Valley Hospital Auxiliary, treasurer of the Ladies of the Elks, and President & Treasurer of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Olyphant.  She was a Democratic Committee Woman for 25 years and helped with fund raising events.  She was also a member of the Altrusa Club of Scranton, the Olyphant Professional Business Women and the Perpetual Eucharistic Group. She loved to garden, was a wonderful cook and baker and was an avid NY Yankee and Philadelphia Phillies fan. She is survived by a son, Thomas and wife, Aileen of Jessup and a daughter, Nancy of Olyphant and nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Stasia Mulrooney. Funeral Services will be held at 9AM on Thursday at the Hudak-O’Shea Funeral Home, 115 Garfield Avenue, Olyphant.  Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Lincoln Avenue, Olyphant. Rev. Kenneth Kizis will officiate. Interment will be at the parish cemetery.
