Eugene Edward Bryer

October 31, 1942 — February 12, 2011

Eugene Edward Bryer, 69, of Olyphant, died Saturday morning at Mid Valley Hospital.  His wife is the former Helen Macekura.  They celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on February 4th. Born in Mayfield, he resided in Olyphant for the last 44 years.  He was the son of the late Joseph and Helen Bryer and was a graduate of Blakely High School.  A business owner for over 30 years, he more recently worked for at Scranton Grinder for 6 years.  He enjoyed his time working at local flea markets for many years. He was a US Air Force Veteran who served with the GEEIA Squadron at Patrick’s Airbase in Florida during the early days of NASA. Gene was a former member and 3 year past president of the Olyphant Lions Club, a former volunteer and EMT with the Olyphant Ambulance & Rescue Squad and a cubscout and boyscout leader in the 1980′s.  He collected American flag memorabilia, enjoyed listening to his short wave radio and loved his cats, Maggie and Shadow. Gene’s dream was to hike the Appalachian Trail. He is also survived by one son, Eugene M. Bryer and wife, Elizabeth of Titusville, FL; four grandchildren: Victoria, Alexandria and Eugene A. Bryer and Charles Zaffuto; three brothers: Joseph, Michael & Robert Bryer; his mother-in-law, Eleanor Macekura of Wilkes-Barre; nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Andrew Nicholas Bryer. Requiem services will be held at 7PM on Wednesday at the  Hudak-O’Shea Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Garfield Ave., Olyphant .  The Rev. David Cowan, pastor of All Saints Orthodox Church, Olyphant will officiate.  Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Friends may call on Wednesday evening from 5 to 7PM at the funeral home. For directions or online condolences, please visit hudak-osheafuneralhome.com.
